Overview
The Parque Natural de la Sierra de Irta is located within the municipality of Alcala de Xivert, Santa Magdalena de Polpis and Peñiscola. Within the park are Templar Castles, Christian shrines and the remains of a Moorish village. The protected area covers 12,000ha. The Sierra’s cliffs lead down to the coast, making it one of the most beautiful and unspoilt areas on the Mediterranean coast.

Walking
There are several walking routes. They range from moderate to very high difficulty.

Sightseeing
Templar fortress Castle Xivert is located on the top of the Sierra de Irta, it is steeped with history. Below the fortress is the remains of a Moorish village. The Peniscola Castle is also situated in the park and is another place of great cultural and architectural interest. The Castle Pulpis, located in the town of Santa Magalena de Polpis on the northwest portion of the Sierra is also worth visiting.

Animals/Birds
There are a wide variety of birds within the Parque Natural de la Sierra de Irta which include shag, Audoiun’s gull,warblers, and shrike.

Plants
On the cliffs and crags grow samphire and Saladillo. The coastal mountain range is home to mainly Mediterranean scrubland which consists of lensic, heather, rosemary, juniper and hawthorn.
