Sierra de la Culebra Natural Space

Sierra de la Culebra Natural Space

Overview
The extensive territory of the Sierra de la Culebra natural space is located in the north-eastern region of the province of Zamora. Although the area is mountainous, it is not particularly high (highest peak being just over 1000m). The area covers a total of 6,5891ha.

Sightseeing
The town Villardeciervos has striking rural architecture. It has been declared a Historic-Artistic Monument and still retains its stone houses with wooden balconies. South of the Sierra de la Culebra is Castile Rihonor. This is a particularly interesting place as half of the town belongs to Spain and the other half to Portugal. Neighbours communicate with one another in a language which is halfway between the Castilian and Portuguese.

Animals/Birds
Sierra de la Culebra has one of the largest populations of wolves in all Europe. Other mammals worth mentioning are deer, roe deer and otters.

Plants
The Sierra de la Culebra natural space was once home to vast forests of chestnut and holm oak, this has since been replanted with conifers and extensive areas of heather and rockrose.
